(Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton at the Spanish Grand Prix 2024)
Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have often been compared and contrasted but almost always pitted against each other as enemies. Typically, if you liked one, the “rules” were that you didn’t like the other. It would be like asking a Ravens fan to also like the Steelers. However, this is not football, and both drivers have exemplary skills.
Lewis Hamilton is part of a generation before Max’s time. He began driving for the McLaren Formula 1 team in 2007 and had one of the best rookie seasons ever. He finished second in the driver’s championship, only one point behind the winner, Kimi Räikkönen. Lewis driving for McLaren was no surprise, as he has had ties with Mercedes since he was go-karting. After winning his first championship with McLaren in 2008, he moved on to the parent team, Mercedes, in 2013. This move was rewarded with championship after championship being won. Lewis would win four consecutive championships with Mercedes. Lewis ultimately won seven championships altogether. Lewis is tied for most championships ever won with the legendary motorist Michael Schumacher. However, he doesn’t come without his controversies. Depending on your side, some say that his racecraft was too aggressive and think he should have been penalized more for it; others say that it is just part of racing.
Max Verstappen is one of the most well-known drivers of the current generation. His skill and prowess on the track make it hard not to recognize. Like Lewis Hamilton, he has had ties with the current team he has been driving for since very early in his racing career. He signed into the junior team of Red Bull, Toro Rosso, for only two years before he was promoted to the parent team in 2016. Mercedes and Redbull have been going head-to-head for years now. It wasn’t until 2021 that Max and Red Bull could stand on the top step. Since 2021, Max has won in 2022, 2023, and is on track to win the title in 2024. If Max wins, this will be his fourth consecutive win. Max also has his fair share of controversies in the name of winning. Again, depending on what camp people are in influences their opinions on the controversies.
The point is that both of these drivers have commendable skills, a passion for the sport, and the will to fight like hell in the name of racing. The pair have had their moments of immaturity and maturity. Both seem to have grown and become humble. If you don’t like Max Verstappen, you shouldn’t like Lewis Hamilton and vice versa.
